Match Review: ‘Late but great’ for Paris in Basel

On Tuesday night PSG booked their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League due to a wonder strike from right back Thomas Meunier. The game ended 2-1 to the Parisians, maintaining their undefeated champions league campaign in Group A.

Straight from the kick off, Paris took command of the game, dominating the ball from start to finish. However, they were unable to create any clear cut chances until the 19th minute when Cavani lobbed the keeper but couldn’t keep the ball from looping of the bar as well.

Eventually PSG were able to find the back of the net right at the end of the first half. Lucas’ corner found Meunier who drilled the ball low across the six yard box and Matuidi was on hand to flick the ball into the net to make it 1-0.

The second half took the same pattern with PSG controlling the game and squeezing the life out of the hopeless Basel team. However, a long hopeful cross from Luca Zuffi of Basel looped all the way over Areola and into the goal, much to the delight of the home fans.

The game changed once more with 4 minutes until time when Geoffroy Serey Dié got sent off for two bookable offences with a completely uncontrolled tackle on Marco Verratti, which arguably could of resulted in a straight red card.

But the hectic ending to the match ended in delight for the visitors who won the game thanks to a moment of magic from PSG right back: Thomas Meunier. The Belgium international received a floating cross from the right hand side and sent the ball flying into the top right corner with a outstanding volley. A goal worthy of winning any match and the goal meant that PSG booked their place in the round of 16 with Arsenal, who also were victorious against Ludogorets in Bulgaria.

Final Score: Basel 1-2 PSG

Top Performance: Thomas Meunier. The Belgium got the assist for the first goal and scored the magnificent winner when the 90th minute was up.

Next Match: PSG Vs Rennes, Sunday 6th November, 7:45pm
