It was never going to be easy for PSG travelling to Lyon, fighting against a wall of noise at the Parc OL, but Paris Saint Germain left the south of France with all three points thanks to Edinson Cavani, the in form man in the league at the moment.
It was an eventful afternoon in Ligue 1 on Sunday. League leaders Nice were the first to play against Bastia. However, things didn’t go quite as planned for Nice who could only come away with a 1-1 draw. Much to the delight of Paris who knew that a win would take them to only one point off top spot.
As predicted going into the game, Emery replaced Krychowiak from the Arsenal match and instead gave Hatem Ben Arfa a starting role against one of his former teams. But not may foresaw Emery going back to a 4-2-3-1 formation that recorded a convincing victory against the same opposition at the start of the season.
And the system worked especially well right from the start. PSG looked comfortable with possession and solid at the back. And not long into the game PSG were causing Lyon a lot of problems down the wings. Lucas should have slotted home the opener but couldn’t sort out his feet in time. Then only a matter of minutes after that chance, PSG were awarded a penalty after Thiago Motta looked to be taken down by Raffael. El Matador stepped up and there was no doubt about the outcome. 1-0. PSG were completely in control and held the lead until half time.
After seeing the visitors cruising in the first half, Lyon coach, Bruno Génésio, changed their system by bringing on Mathieu Valbuena and Nabil Fekir. And it took approximately 3 minutes for Valbuena to completely turn the game on its head by equalising with a fine strike after Raffael struck the post. The Parc OL was bouncing and he atmosphere was electric and it certainly gave Lyon that extra kick to go on and win. They came close on several occasions but could capitalise.
Les Parisiens did extremely well to take command and kill the Lyon momentum for a long period of the second half. And the hard work payed off when Cavani headed in for his 13th league goal following an efficient counter from PSG. Krychowiak should have sealed the game but in the end Paris came away with an highly impressive and professional 2-1 victory against one of their title rivals of previous campaigns!
Final Score: Lyon 1-2 PSG
Top Performance: Edinson Cavani – El Matador is now up to 23 goals in 22 games in all competitions this season for PSG and conformably won the ‘battle of the strikers’ last night by out scoring Alexandre Lacazette.
Next up for the Champions are Angers on Wednesday night in Ligue 1. Angers are currently 10th in the table and, although are not hitting he heights of last season, are still playing impressive and consistent football and are a tough test for any team. But its hard to see past PSG who are quickly chasing down that Nice lead at the top of the table. Paris still have serve high profile players missing for Wednesday night but are clear favourites to make it 5 league wins on the bounce at the Parc Des Princes.
