Paris put five past Lorient in a convincing performance in front of a previously impatient Parc Des Princes crowd in order to end the year in a strong fashion. A 5-0 win that looks to have eased the intense criticism and pressure put on Emery throughout the last couple of weeks.
Going into the final game of the year, PSG were clear favourites to beat bottom of the league Lorient, and Les Parisiens certainly delivered. Goals from Thomas Meunier, Thiago Silva, Edinson Cavani and Lucas Moura plus an own goal from Toure of Lorient sealed an impressive 5-0 win.
The Belgian Thomas Meunier started ahead Serge Aurier and got the ball rolling with another wonder goal to add to the one he scored in the Champions League against Basel. When he received the ball he flicked it over the defenders head, chested it down and lobbed the goalkeeper from an incredible angle. A cracker just in time for Christmas for Meunier and PSG.
PSG went in at Half Time 2-0 up when a teasing low cross was turned into his own goal by Toure. PSG did not take their feet off of the accelerator after the break either. It was Thiago Silva who added another goal from a corner to make three. Furthermore, the Paris captain has signed a new long term contract, keeping him in Paris until 2020!
Edinson Cavani was then taken down by the Lorient goalkeeper and he stepped up himself to score the resulting penalty. El Matador has now equaled a PSG record of scoring 18 goals in the first half of the season. The game was sealed when Lucas Moura, the real star performer from last night, lobbed he keeper after he received a fantastic through ball from Marco Verratti.
The win was made even more crucial as Nice failed to beat Bordeaux last night, moving within five points off the leaders. Les Parisians now have Christmas and the new year off football duty due to the winter break in France. A lot to reflect on during this time off but memories of last nights performance will certainly keep Unai Emery and the club warm hearted going into 2017.
Final Score: PSG 5-0 Lorient
Top Performance: Lucas Moura – The Brazilian got the goal he deserved with a beautiful chip over the goalkeeper and the Brazilian was also the cause of the own goal and assisted Thiago Silva with a great corner kick.
