After the break over Christmas and New Year for Paris Saint Germain, they set out on their quest to retain the Coupe De France for a third year in a row, and Bastia are the opponents in the round of 64 for Paris on Saturday evening.
PSG are the clear favourites to move into the next round when Bastia travel to the capital to face the team that have dominated this competition, and domestic football in France, in recent history. Last May PSG defeated Marseille in the final of this competition very comfortably in Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s last game for the club, and since things haven’t gone very smoothly.
However all eyes will be on new signing Julian Draxler when PSG kick off their Coupe De France campaign this weekend. The German completed his signing from Wolfsburg on Tuesday and after playing a part in the clubs 3-0 friendly victory over Club Africain, Draxler is set to make his competitive debut.
Giovanni Lo Celso is out of the squad despite making his first appearance in midweek too. Lo Celso joined in the summer and he has gone under the radar after being loaned back out Rosario Central. The young talent also made three appearances at the Olympic games for Argentina in the summer, proving his immense potential.
Meunier will also get a start in the first team for weeks to come with the influential Serge Aurier playing for his home nation, Ivory Coast, in the AFCON. Paris fans will be hoping these introductions to the team can kick start their season.
Although Bastia have failed defeat, or record a draw, against PSG in recent seasons, they have come close and seem to stop Paris from playing their preferred style of play and can make it very scrappy. The two teams met in the first game of Ligue 1 this season, a game in which Bastia put up a good fight like usual, but PSG’s quality came through when Kurzawa got the only goal of the game last in the second half.
Le Rouge et Bleu will be hoping they can defeat Bastia in a more comfortable way at the Parc Des Princes and hopefully go far into this years tournament and gain momentum going into a crucial second half of the season.
