Julian Draxler’s goal was the difference between the two teams this weekend and the reason that PSG took three points away at Rennes and cut the gap between them and leaders Nice and Monaco to just three points.
Paris have made an excellent start to the year and their first league game was another triumph too. Julian Draxler was first to be thanked from his teammates and the fans and correctly so. The German has hit the ground running in Paris and looks to have given the team that much needed lift in during his first games for the club.
The game as whole was a game of few clear cut chances. PSG had some light shots that didn’t test the goalkeeper early on and Draxler too had shot well saved too when cutting in from the left wing.
Eventually, it was the German who found the back of the net. Verratti found Draxler out wide and he struck a perfectly weighted shot first time across Costil and into the corner. His first goal on his Ligue 1 debut and his second in two games after netting the seventh in the thrashing of Bastia the previous weekend. It’s fair to say that Draxler has made a positive impact in the capital.
Though throughout the encounter PSG lacked a lot of creativity, but can consider themselves unlucky not to receive at least one penalty. Verratti looked to be brought down by Costil in the first half but only earned a yellow card from the referee. Then Motta was also sent tumbling by the goalkeeper, a penalty that didn’t look as blatant, but nonetheless could have easily been given.
The victory was pleasing to see from a Paris perspective. Showing that Paris can come away with a win, despite not playing to their best of ability. Leaders Nice dropping points was also music to Paris’ ears and concluded a perfect opening Ligue 1 weekend to 2017, with Les Parisiens now only three points off first place Monaco.
Final Score: Rennes 0-1 PSG
Top Performance: Julian Draxler – The new signing has been under the spotlight in his opening games for Paris and has delivered to the best of his ability scoring a crucial, and beautiful, goal on Saturday.
