Match Review: Destructive PSG blast past Bordeaux and into the final

It was PSG who came out victorious in the Semi Final of the French League Cup over Bordeaux in midweek. Les Parisiens now face the tough test of Monaco in the final after they defeated Nancy in the other semi on Wednesday night.

Going into the clash with Bordeaux, PSG looked as if they would not have it all their own way but Paris contrasted most people’s expectations with a resounding 4-1 win away form home. Paris Saint Germain have now booked their spot in their fourth consecutive Coupe De La Ligue, a new French record.

They will face current Ligue 1 leaders AS Monaco in the final of this years competition. Monaco also comfortably beat their opponents Nancy to make their way into the final on which will take place on the 1st April.

The first key moment of the match was the sublime free kick from Angel Di Maria. The Argentine has been far from his best all season and as a result has been dropped from the starting XI with fierce competition from Julian Draxler and Lucas Moura, as well as new signing Goncalo Guedes adding to the competition for places up front at PSG.

However, it fair to say Di Maria made the most of his start. A brilliant free kick really reminds everyone of his true qualities, was then followed by another great strike to put the game to bed in the second half. Di Maria’s big statement now gives Unai Emery a nice problem for the PSG coach when choosing who to start this weekend in the clash of the heavyweights against Monaco.

The other key talking point from the semi final was Edinson Cavani. El Matador scored his second brace in as many games with some well taken goals. His first was a bullet into the top corner when facing the goalkeeper one on one and his second wasn’t as pleasing on the eye, yet very effective at killing all Bordeaux hope of another recovery. Cavani also reached a PSG milestone by drawing level with Pauleta as their all time second highest goalscorer.

Les Parisiens conceded their first goal of 2017 when Rolan put the hosts level, but Paris pulled away with ease in the second half to move into the final of the League Cup. 21 goals and only 1 conceded is also the type of form Emery would have desired going into the crucial match with title rivals Monaco on Sunday.

Final Score: Bordeaux 1-4 PSG

Top Performance: Angel Di Maria – El Fideo has struggled with form this season and that stroke of brilliance that got the ball rolling in the first half could be the turning point in his season

Next Match: PSG v Monaco, Sunday 29th January, 8:00pm
