Paris Saint Germain defeated fellow Ligue 1 opponents comfortably in the early rounds of the Coupe De France on Wednesday night. The 4-0 win takes PSG into the Round of 16 where they will be the clear favourites when they travel to Niort.
Julian Draxler and Hatem Ben Arfa where the stand out performers. The former has had an excellent start to his Ligue 1 career and scored once again when it mattered. He bagged two by the end of the match, earning the German 4 goals already in his first 5 appearance for Les Parisiens.
Hatem Ben Arfa, on the other hand, has not had an easy time in the capital but he played terrifically against Rennes. Two assists topped with a goal made it an inspirational performance that will give Unai Emery more to ponder on in terms of competition for staring places in the PSG squad.
During the first 20 minutes of the match, Paris failed to create much at all but a long ball over the defence was finished delightedly with a chip over the keeper from Julian Draxler. Paris scored again before half time to put themselves in the driving seat when Lucas Moura puts away a magnificent low cross from Ben Arfa.
And after half time it was the Frenchman again, who linked up with Draxler this time, to make it three. The fourth was then creatively constructed with a quick free kick to Ben Arfa who got the goal his performance deserved.
The match got PSG back to winning ways after a disappointing draw with Monaco last weekend and they can now look forward to a run of important league games to come.
Final Score: Rennes 0-4 PSG
Top Performance: Julian Draxler – Hatem Ben Arfa was key to most of Paris’ goals against Rennes but the German scored the two vital goals which made the game comfortable for Les Parisiens.
On Saturday, Paris Saint Germain travel to Dijon in their quest to retain their Ligue 1 title. Dijon have had a respectable season thus far; sitting 13th in the table. Only one loss in five games could make Dijon a tough opponent to face but in all likelihood, Paris should repeat their 3-0 win they recorded at the Parc Des Princes in September.
There is also an added importance to this match too with Monaco hosting Nice earlier in the day. Consequently, at least one of the teams above Paris Saint Germain will drop points meaning a win is crucial in order to gain points on the other high flyers.
PSG still have many key players missing in their squad to face Dijon. Di Maria, Marco Verratti and Kevin Trapp are the main absences. However, Goncalo Guedes may get given his full debut with Lille to come on Tuesday and Adrien Rabiot should keep his place with Verratti out too.
Predicted Starting XI
(4-3-3) Areola; Aurier, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Aurier; Rabiot, Nkunku, Matuidi; Draxler, Cavani, Guedes
Dijon 0-2 PSG
