Unbelievable, astonishing and sensational! Every Paris Saint Germain player was a hero last night on Valentines day as the hosts blew Barcelona away with a brilliant attacking display to overcome the five time European champions 4-0.
Many people overlooked Paris’ chances of beating Barcelona last night. But Emery and his men proved everyone wrong in making last night one of the greatest nights in Paris Saint Germain history.
Unai Emery has certainly had his critics since joining PSG last summer but it was tactical masterclass from Emery last night against Barcelona. Fuelled by many previous disappointments against Barcelona, Emery’s desire to win alongside his experience in facing Barcelona were key factors that made it such a perfect tactical display.
Angel Di Maria was the real star of the first hour before he was replaced. The Argentine bagged himself two brilliant goals: his free kick opened the scoring delightfully and he then struck a beautiful curling shot into the top corner past Ter Stegen. Di Maria and Adrien Rabiot were the stand out performers in L’Equipe’s player rating, both receiving extraordinary ratings of 9 out of 10. It hasn’t been easy for El Fideo this season, he has dipped in and out of form, but since the arrival of Julian Draxler the Argentine has seemed to of lifted his game and now looks to be back to very best.
Julian Draxler has been a sensation in the capital since his arrival too and he tormented the weak Barcelona right back Sergi Roberto all night. He’s already scored on his Ligue 1 and French Cup debut, and now Julian Draxler has scored on his Champions League debut for PSG as well.
With already 6 goals in 6 Champions league and a goal in each of his last three games, it was inevitable that Edinson Cavani would get on the score sheet too. El Matador’s desire and relief to have finally scored against Barcelona after previous disappointments was clear to see in the celebrations that followed.
Despite Les Parisiens magnificent attacking and all round game throughout the 90 minutes, Barcelona were very disappointing. Messi was unbelievably sloppy and Suarez was unusually anonymous. A lot of this is due to a brilliant performance from stand in centre back Presnel Kimpembe who looked in control very time he was called upon. Barca also let the PSG three man midfield have a lot of space, a privilege they wont get in the second leg at the Camp Nou.
Paris fans, like myself, still can’t believe what happened last night. Paris’ high press and intense play was a treat to watch and, baring they get past Barcelona in the second leg, could make them real favourites going into the latter stages of this years competition.
Final Score: PSG 4-0 Barcelona
Top Performance: Di Maria, Adrien Rabiot, Marco Verratti, Julian Draxler, Presnel Kimpembe… And the list goes on! Everyone in a Paris shirt performed amazingly in the demolition of Barcelona.
Next Match: PSG v Toulouse, Sunday 19th February, 8:00pm
