With Barcelona still fresh in the minds of Paris fans, PSG delivered another spectacular performance to dismantled Marseille on the south coast of France to restore their second place spot in Ligue 1.
PSG climbed above Nice on goal difference after putting five goals past Marseille in the Classico. Prior to clash Emery’s men knew they had to win in order to stay in the title race and the reigning French champions delivered in style.
Paris Saint Germain ran riot throughout the 90 minutes, exposing the Marseille defence right from the start when Marquinhos finished off a slick free kick routine. Edinson Cavani doubled the visitors lead – with his 40th goal for club and country already this season – with a perfect chip over Pele in goal for Marseille.
The hosts were down at the break before Lucas Moura, Julian Draxler and Blaise Matuidi capped off a brilliant attacking display from Les Parisiens to humble their rivals 5-1.
Before kick off many eye brows may have been raised with unsure feelings, alongside huge anticipation when Javier Pastore was named in starting eleven. The Argentine has dipped in and out form since he moved to Paris over five years ago but he has certainly remained a big fan favourite. He was exceptional on Sunday night; performing to a high standard and producing a fabulous assist for El Matador in the first half.
Despite the superb attacking display from Les Parisiens, Marseille were woeful at the back. Dreadful defending shown in every one of Paris’ goals; the hosts lacked any organisation and seemed to allow every PSG man going forward acres of space to pick apart the defence time and time again.
It was a historic win for PSG on the south coast of France and restores their hope of retaining their Ligue 1 title with just three point standing between themselves and Monaco who lead the way going into March.
Final Score: Marseille 1-5 PSG
Top Performance: Javier Pastore – So many players in blue had exceptional games but Pastore caught the eye on his first start for five months
Next Match: Niort v PSG, Wednesday 1st March, 5:30pm (French Cup)
On Wednesday afternoon Paris travel to the Stade René Gaillard stadium to face second division Chamois Niortais FC in the Round of 16 of the French Cup. PSG will be without many key names, including Ben Arfa, Di Maria, Rabiot, Motta and Verratti for the cup tie. However this may open the gate for Giovanni Lo Celso and Gonacalo Guedes to make his first start, as well as a chance for Krychowiak to prove himself in which could be a rare chance for him to catch the eye of Unai Emery.
Predicted Starting XI
(4-3-3) Areola; Aurier, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Maxwell; Krychowiak, Lo Celso, Nkunku; Lucas, Guedes, Draxler
Niort 0-4 PSG
