On Saturday evening Paris Saint Germain won their fourth consecutive Coupe de la Ligue title by putting four goals past high flying Monaco. The league leaders were blown away by a specular Paris Saint Germain, with Angel Di Maria and Edinson Cavani making the headlines with stellar performance once again.
The cup final had all the ingredients to be a fascinating encounter and the match didn’t disappoint. There was a fascinating light show prior to kick off and PSG put on their own show on the pitch; and straight from the start when Di Maria and Draxler broke through the Monaco defence and the German was left with a tap in. Julian Draxler has had a huge impact in the capital since joining in January and continues to perform on the big stage for Paris Saint Germain.
Monaco didn’t lie down though despite being behind early on and found themselves level through a brilliant Thomas Lemar strike past a hopeless Kevin Trapp. Monaco are the top goal scorers across Europe’s top 5 leagues so it was unsurprising to see them score against timid PSG defence. But Paris responded before the break with Angel Di Maria showing everyone his immense talent when Draxler returned the favour, finding him in space and El Fideo finished skilfully to restore their lead.

The second half certainly didn’t see a change or drop in intensity between France’s top two teams and Edinson Cavani struck an unstoppable volley into Subasic’s bottom corner to put daylight between the two sides. Verratti’s assist was something special for Les Parisien supporters to witness as well.
El Matador wasn’t done there however. The Uruguayan has a formidable record in cup finals for PSG and he thundered in Paris’ fourth goal off the under side of the bar; taking Paris fans to heaven and leaving Monaco players and fans alike gobsmacked.
Monaco have been unplayable in all competitions this season but without key figures like Fabinho and Falcao, Paris Saint Germain were able to run riot all night. Angel Di Maria was exceptional, providing two assists and chipping in with a goal himself. The whole side did themselves justice after the unthinkable events last month and a big step was made in the right direction last night as Paris outshone and outplayed a strong Monaco side to claim their fourth Coupe de la Ligue victory in as many years.
Final Score: Monaco 1-4 PSG
Top Performance: Angel Di Maria – The Argentine was incredible yet again in the final and came up with a goal and two assists which were crucial for Paris
Next Match: Avranches v PSG, Wednesday 5th April, 8:05pm
PSG face Avranches, who sit in the third tier of French football, in the quarter finals of the Coupe de France in midweek. After winning the league cup this weekend, it is very hard to look past Paris as they strive for more silverware come the end of the season. Changes are likely to occur in the Starting XI but Emery must be wary after Paris struggled away at Niort in the last round of the competition on a similarly worn down pitch.
