Incredible; Outstanding; Mad! Blaise Matuidi saved Paris Saint Germain’s season with a goal deep into stoppage time in the most dramatic of circumstances in Metz to keep PSG in with a chance of retaining their Ligue 1 title.
After an excellent first half from Emery’s men, it looked as if PSG would stroll to a comfortable victory in Metz. Edinson Cavani put PSG ahead – incredibly scoring his 30th league goal of the season – and Blasie Matuidi, who has come under a lot of criticism since the Barcelona meltdown, doubled the lead shortly after.
Paris were in control for most of the second half too until Metz mounted a heroic comeback, from Yann Jouffre catching Les Parisiens off guard with a wonderful free kick to when Cheick Diabate turned Paris’ fears into a reality in the 88th minute to pull Metz level at 2-2. As it stood Metz were more or less handing Monaco the title and not many could have foreseen what was to happen next.
Paris held nothing back in their attempt to stay in the title race and in the dying seconds of the match Blaise Matuidi headed in the winner, sending the whole Paris bench into complete ecstasy.
“At the moment, we needed to play with heart in the final minutes to get the three points.”

Despite criticism, the Frenchman has captained the side in Thiago Silva’s absence in recent weeks with considerable success and was undoubtedly Paris’ hero in Metz with his incredible winner deep into stoppage time. Brazilian left back was also a surprising candidate for man of the match with two assists in the first half and the 35 year old proved he is a worthy starter in the Paris defence.
The win keeps Paris Saint Germain firmly in the race for the title and move level on points with Monaco, who have a game in hand but could suffer from a more challenging schedule compared to Les Parisiens. All PSG can do is continue to grind out victories and hope that the season throws up more unexpected circumstances as we reach the highly anticipated climax.
