Match Review: PSG continue to grind out the victories ahead of a significant week

Paris Saint Germain continued their excellent winning run on Saturday afternoon when they registered a comfortable, but not convincing, 2-0 victory at home to Montpellier to keep the pressure firmly on Monaco.

Going into the clash with mid table Montpellier, Paris knew a win would take them provisionally top of the table but they had to work for the opening goal that came before the half an hour mark. Blasie Matuidi, who won all three points for in Metz last week, picked out Edinson Cavani in the middle and the Uruguayan buried his 31st league goal of the season with a fine first time finish. The goal helped El Matador reach another milestone for Paris Saint Germain, scoring against every team he has faced in France’s top flight, and is now closing in on Ibrahimović’s incredible record of 38 league goals for the capital club.

Montpellier created a considerable amount of chances and gave the Paris defence something to think about throughout the game; even hitting the bar late on in the first half. However, it was the in-form Angel Di Maria who doubled Paris’ lead after the break, latching onto a Cavani back heel and curled it round the keeper stylishly.

The South Americans continued to perform to a very high standard for PSG on the weekend, helping Paris to continue to grind out the victories in Ligue 1 as they attempt to force leaders Monaco into a mistake. Unfortunately, Paris’ biggest hope of Monaco dropping points has come and gone this weekend with the leaders 2-1 win at Lyon on Sunday.

The comfortable victory on Saturday puts Paris in good stead ahead of a crucial week for Emery’s men. They go up against Monaco on Wednesday before a massive head to head clash with third place Nice next weekend in the league.

Final Score: PSG 2-0 Montpellier

Top Performance: Edinson Cavani – El Matador, alongside Di Maria, was the difference on Saturday afternoon; Cavani bagged his 31st league goal and provided a crafty assist for the second to round off another wonderful attacking display.
