It’s fair to say it hasn’t been the most intoxicating or exciting season for Paris Saint Germain but they have the chance to seal the double this evening and it’s Angers who stand between Les Parisiens and Coupe de France success at the Stade de France later on.
The reigning champions have strolled to the final this year in truth. PSG put seven past Bastia and four past Rennes early this year; two comfortable away wins over lower divisions sides Niort and Avranches; before easing past a Monaco B side 5-0 in the semi finals. However it hasn’t been the ideal week of preparation. Di Maria and Javier Pastore had their homes raided in a tax fraud investigation and the reveal of the new home kit for next season didn’t go down particularly well – that said a win tonight in the new strip might change some of those views that are held by the supporters.
“If we win the Coupe de France, we’ll have three trophies, which is a great performance. We’re very motivated for this game and we want to win at any cost”
Angel Di Maria, PSG.fr
If league performances and head to heads are anything to go by heading into the final then Paris should have no problems in retaining their Coupe de France title after two comfortable 2-0 wins over Angers this season already. Although we all know that anything can happen in the final, especially with the pressure of attempting to resurrect a lacklustre campaign, and Paris’ opponents will have nothing to fear in their first ever Coupe de France final and very much being the underdogs going into this final game of the season.
Unai Emery and his men have certainly remained motivated this week and the stakes are high for the 10 times Coupe de France champions as they will hope to set a record number of 11 successes in this competition and give Maxwell a perfect send off in his final match for the club.
No surprise that Ben Arfa and Krychowiak and left out and have likely played their final matches for PSG in this disappointing season. Thomas Meunier and Layvin Kurzawa are also out until next season and Nkunku and Augustin are unavailable to feature because of international duty.
Predicted Starting XI
(4-3-3) Trapp; Aurier, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Maxwell; Matuidi, Rabiot, Verratti; Di Maria, Cavani, Draxler
Subs: Areola, Kimpembe, Motta, Pastore, Lo Celso, Lucas, Guedes
PSG 2-0 Angers
I don’t think their will be too many problems for Paris. Despite being the clear favourites there is still a lot to play for and with the added motivation from Unai Emery who will want to secure is his job for next season, I believe the Capital club will have too much for Angers.
