Paris Saint Germain will be looking to extend their lead at the top of Ligue 1 in the highly anticipated clash with title holders AS Monaco this weekend.
Last season was a tale of woes for Emery’s men whereas Monaco were in heaven throughout the 2016/2017 season as they left the Parisians trailing in their shadows. Just like in midweek when Celtic angered the Parisians, last years experience has only made PSG stronger and they will have the chance to go 9 points clear of Monaco with another win down on the south coast of France.
PSG’s summer signing Kylian Mbappe was a crucial clog in the Monaco side last season and if the pressure wasn’t already high enough on the 18 year-old wonderkid, all eyes will be on him once again as he returns to his old stamping ground.
“It will be a special match for him” Emery commented on Mbappe, before going on to add “he will give 100 per cent for Paris St Germain” on Sunday evening.
Unbeaten PSG will go into the match with confidence sky high after a resounding 7-1 win over Celtic on Wednesday night. Mbappe, Cavani and Neymar were on top form in the Champions League and will no doubt cause an inconsistent Monaco side similar problems.
On the flip side Monaco saw their hopes of progressing into the round of 16 dashed away by RB Leipzig in comfortable fashion. A win for Monaco on Sunday is a must if they realistically stand any chance of making this years title race a competitive one.
Edinson Cavani is defiantly one to keep an eye on in the Principality. The man nicknamed El Matador became the first player in Europe’s top five leagues to register 20 goals this season after a record equalling start to this campaign, and he also has a very respectable record against Monaco in recent history.
PSG have named the same 18 man squad as named against Celtic in midweek. Kylian Mbappe is set to start against his former club. Thiago Motta remains sidelined (Knee) whereas Lucas Moura, Nkunku and Ben Arfa have been left out all together.
Predicted Starting XI
(4-3-3) Areola – Dani Alves, Thiago Silva (C), Marquinhos, Yuri – Verratti, Rabiot, Draxler – Mbappe, Cavani, Neymar
Monaco 0-2 PSG
Summer loses like Bernardo Silva and Tiémoué Bakayoko have hit Monaco hard this season and Neymar and Co. look too strong at this moment in time for the reigning champions. I also wouldn’t put it past Mbappe making a massive impact on his return.
